GENERAL
The earliest dated clip seen is from February 1958 and is known as the "single pip" design which latter went on to become the Mark 3 charger. Recent information points to the fact the 'Horseshoe' charger was a British development along with the 2 piped Mark 2 charger.

Because of the close working relationship and interchangeability requirement between British, Canadian and Australian rifle development programs a large amount of unique items such as chargers ended up in the other countries for trials. It's probably because of this reason so many horseshoe chargers have turned up in Canada.

Version A Chargers
I have one example of this charger and it is dated 3-58. The difference between the two versions of chargers relate to the end profile of the charger.   I have classified this version of profile as 2.  The other identification point of this charger is the coating of yellow lacquer.

Version B Chargers
I have examples of this charger that are dated between 5-58 and 3-59. The difference between these chargers and the Version A is a modification to the end profile.  I have classified this version of profile as 3.

Both these chargers are coated with a yellow lacquer.  I believe the end profile of this charger was changed to reduce the risk of the user cutting their thumb when using it.

Version C Charger (standard production)
This is the standard charger used by the Canadian forces, basically it's a phosphated Version B.  I have found examples dated between 4-59 to 1983 made by Dominion Arsenal, Quebec 'DAQ' then Industries Valcartier Industries 'IVI'.

Experimental, Prototype and Trials Chargers
EXPERIMENTAL SHEET METAL CHARGERS
Believed to be made in the mid to late 50's these experimental chargers are reminiscent of the early experimental stripper clips/chargers for the T44 and could in fact be a part of the T44E4 rifle trials? (see Collector Grade Publications book, US Rifle M14 from John Garand to the M21. Page 324, figs 216 - 218.) These chargers have been sourced from Canada and have been described as for use with the C1 rifle.

EXPERIMENTAL PLASTIC CHARGERS
These date from around 1960, when the Rifle Steering Committee were investigating alternative designs of chargers, in this case Canada put forward these plastic chargers as an option.  Unfortunately plastics were still in their infancy and the chargers were weaker and didn't have the longevity of the existing steel chargers currently being manufactured.
